Nominator's project description
| Professor Mak is an internationally acclaimed researcher in the study of atomically thin 2D materials and the new physical that they permit. He discovered that the MoS2 monolayer was a direct band-gap semiconductor, quite unlike the corresponding bulk material. The study of 2D materials has grown into a huge worldwide activity and Professor Mak's research has kept defining and re-defining the forefront of the field. During his stay in Germany, he focuses on the development of methods to dynamically control the many-body Hamiltonians and to investigate the quantum many-body dynamics in 2D moiré materials. |
